    Abstract
A combination of increasing data size and increasing query complexity has lead to a situation where term based querying is not sufficient for a large class of IR tasks. For example, a query for all instances of the drug aspirin would require thousands of terms ORed together at the least (including trade names, chemical names, brand names, etc.), and would still have a large number of false positives. One solution to this problem is to perform processing ahead of time on the documents to generate complex annotations, and then to execute the queries not just on the source documents, but on the annotations as well.
This approach will be discussed in the context of the WebFountain system, a system which produces over an order of magnitude more annotations per document than the source document. This allows us to ask very complex queries and receive results in real time, even over a 4 billion document store.
